Zurich Airport, formerly Zurich-Kloten airport is the most important airport in Switzerland and is amongst the most important airports in Europe. It is operated by Unique (Flughafen Zürich AG).
Situated 12 km north of Zurich, the airport is hub of the airline Swiss (Swiss International Air Lines and Swiss European Air Lines) and Deutsche Lufthansa (third Hub), is home airport of the airlines Belair, Edelweiss Air and Helvetic Airways, as well as being the seat of the Swiss air rescue services (Rega). The main part of the airport is in the community of Kloten, the remaining area extending into the communities of Opfikon-Glattbrugg, Rümlang, Oberglatt and Winkel.
All airport buildings are linked via the Skymetro. On 01.06.1980, the SBB-Station of the airport line was opened, with a direct connection to the rail network. Situated in the basement of the terminal, the SBB-airport station Zurich has regular services to Zurich central station and other destinations in the whole of Switzerland. Regular and direct InterCity and InterRegio trains also link Zurich airport with all large cities in Switzerland, including Berne, Basel, St. Gallen, Lucerne, Constance, Geneva, Lausanne and Lugano. 13 lines go from the airport to the most important towns in the Zurich Unterland, to Glattal, Zurich-Oerlikon and Winterthur. There is also a bus station. 11 bus lines run between Zurich Airport and the surrounding towns and villages. Routes 1, 2, 759 and 768 go via the bus stop Balsberg with connections to the regional train S7; route 781 goes via Glattbrugg with a connection to the regional service S5. As Zurich airport is at the centre of the Swiss motorway network, excellent access exists to Zurich, Berne, Basel and St. Gallen (motorways A1, A20, A51) as well as Kloten, Bulach, Schaffhausen (motorway A51), Glattbrugg and Rumlang.
