Description:
|
Munich-Franz Josef Strauss Airport, 28 km north of Munich in Erdinger Moos in a municipality of Freising, was first opened on 17.05.1992 after the airport Munich Riem had become too small. The move took place overnight with the transferral of the entire Munich Riem airport to Franz Josef Strauss Airport. With an area of 1560 hectares, Munich-Franz Josef Strauss is Germany’s second largest passenger airport and although it was named after the former Bavarian prime minister Franz Josef Strauss, it is normally simply referred to as “Munich airport II” or Munich Airport, or the IATA code MUC is used.
It is the second largest airline hub in Germany after Frankfurt/Main Airport and is Lufthansa’s second German hub as well as that of the Star Alliance, whereby Munich airport enjoys a certain international significance. Along with Frankfurt Airport and Cologne/Bonn, but as opposed to Dusseldorf Airport and most regional airports, the infrastructure at Munich Airport makes it a suitable airport for use by the new Airbus A380. According to the number of passengers handled, Munich International Airport counted 7th in Europe in April 2006, coming just behind London Gatwick Airport and ahead of Rome Fiumicino Airport. In 2005 it took up 33rd place worldwide in the international passenger airport ranking.
In total, 113 airlines fly to 250 destinations in 67 countries, 22 of these are in Germany, 159 in Europe and 69 outside Europe. Amongst the low-cost airlines operating from Munich Airport are: airBaltic, Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Cirrus Airlines, Condor, DBA, EasyJet, Flynordic, Germania Express, Germanwings, InterSky, Maersk Air, Snowflake Airlines, TUIFly and Windjet.
Terminal 2 was opened on 29.06.2003. This terminal is used for flights by Lufthansa and Star Alliance and partner airlines such as Qatar Airways, Private Air, Condor and Germanwings as well as regional partners, e.g. Aegean Airlines, Carpatair, Cirrus and JAT Airways.
Future plans include building a regional railway station at the airport and the Hauptbahnhof in Munich to link Munich’s city centre with the airport via the new Transrapid. A connection to the Munich Trade Fair Centre via the S-Bahn S2 is also being planned.

History:
|
The history of the airport of the regional Bavarian capital began in 1912, when an airfield was founded in Oberschleißheim for the royal Bavarian flight patrol. This is still used by the air sports association, as well as by the air patrol of the federal police force and is the oldest airport in Germany still in use. In 1939, the airport was replaced by Riem airport (which had been under construction since 1936) in order to better be able to deal with the high numbers of passengers that could not be handled by the old airport in Oberschleißheim. For a few years the airport was one of the most modern in the world. The passenger numbers in Riem increased steadily in the following years and in 1962 over 1 million passengers could be checked in a year in Munich. Due to these, for that time, extremely high passenger numbers, the Munich city administration in 1963 began to think about and look for a site for a new airport through the Öchsle Commission, as it could be foreseen that the airport in Riem could not deal with the high passenger numbers with its limited capacities, and that a second runway was not conceivable due to the resident population. The commission finally found a suitable area three years later on the former marshland of Erdinger Moos between the districts of Freising and Erding, and another in the Hofoldinger Forest, south of Munich and in the community of Brunnthal. As the latter consisted to a large extent of pine forest and was a very popular recreational area for the population of the city of Munich, the idea was dropped and the commission decided to build the airport in Erding and to resettle the community of 400 inhabitants. The construction of the airport began in the winter of 1980 had, however, to be interrupted for four years after only 5 months of building work because the bavarian superior administrative court allowed the objection that the planned area of the airport was too large. Building work was finally begun in 1984 and the airport’s inauguration could be celebrated in 1989. After the 78 m tower was erected in 1991 and the airport in Riem almost burst at the seams with a total of 12 million yearly passengers, the complete move from the airport at Riem to the new airport was begun on 17th May 1992, after lengthy logistic planning. The airport was extremely successful right from the start as a result of being Lufthansa’s second hub. 11 years later, in the summer of 2003, a new terminal was opened. Now, the two terminals at Franz-Josef Strauss airport together deal with more than 30 passengers a year.

Destinations:
|
The airport has two terminals, each of which can check in about 25 million passengers a year. The first terminal has 19 loading bridges and 60 parking positions for aeroplanes with 6 modules from A to F. Here, all flights are checked in that are not operated by Lufthansa or the Star-Alliance partner airlines. These include the airlines Air Berlin, KLM, Delta Airlines, Finnair, Tarom, Olympic Airways, Iberia, Tuifly, Easyjet, Alitalia, LTU and British Airways. Module F has a special role as this is where the high security flights are checked in, for instance those operated by El-Al to Israel. The second terminal has 24 loading bridges with 75 parking positions and belongs to Lufthansa and its Star-Alliance partners, in order to make the stopovers more efficient. Members of the Star Alliance include the airlines Air Canada, Air China, Cimber Air, Egypt Air, JAT, LOT, Qatar Airways, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Swiss, Thai Airways and United Airlines.
In total 113 Airlines fly to 67 countries and 250 destiantions. 22 of these are in Gemany, 159 in Europe and 69 outside Europe. Low-cost airlines represented at Munich airport include airBaltic, Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Cirrus Airlines, Condor, EasyJet, Flynordic, Germania Express (GEXX), Germanwings, InterSky, TUIfly, Maersk Air, Snowflake Airlines and Windjet.
