Description:
The international airport Manchester Airport was opened for civilian flights in 1938 and is one of the 50 largest airports in the world, as far as traffic volume is concerned. In the United Kingdom, it currently ranks at place 4, behind the London airports of Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted.
Location:
The airport is located about 11 miles south of the city centre, directly on the motorway. Motorists should use the M56 leaving at exit N ° 5, the airport and car parks are then signposted.
Rail passengers can easily reach the airport by travelling to Manchester Airport Railway Station, which is part of the British railway network. The station is located in the middle of the airport complex. A train service exists between the airport and Piccadilly Station, and there are many trains operating to the stations Oxford Road, Deansgate and Salford Crescent. From Manchester Piccadilly Station there is a nationwide train service to more than 100 cities in the United Kingdom. For connections to Wales, the Midlands and the South use Crewe station; for connections to Cumbria and Scotland, Preston station is most convenient.
Manchester City Skyline Stagecoach bus also operates a shuttle bus to the airport every 10 to 30 minutes. Alternatively, the public bus number 43 has a daily service from Manchester city centre to the airport every 10 minutes. National Express operates coaches going to various destinations in the country from the airport, for example to Aberdeen or York.

Destinations:
Currently (December 2007) a total of 74 airlines serve 205 destinations worldwide from the 3 airport terminals.
Most of the scheduled airlines operating short and medium haul flights use Terminal 1 with its 107 check-in counters, used by more than 9 million passengers a year. This terminal is also used by almost all the charter flight companies such as Thomas Cook Airlines, MyTravel Airways and Monarch Airlines, which offer flights to popular holiday destinations worldwide, for example Antalya, Banjul, Larnaca, Cancun, Heraklion, Luxor, Nice, Mombasa, Split or Tenerife. Examples of scheduled airlines operating flights from Terminal 1 are Air Berlin, flying regularly to Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Munich or Zurich; Central Wings with flights to Krakow, Poznan and Warsaw; the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair with connections to Shannon and Dublin, which offers Sky Europe flights to Bratislava, Kosice, Prague and Vienna, Swiss going to Zurich, and Turkish Airlines to Istanbul.
Terminal 2 was opened in 1993 in order to relieve the burden of traffic on the first terminal. Almost all long-haul flights are operated from here such as flights going to Dallas or New York with Delta Airlines. However, many charter flights operated by tour operators also use this terminal. Zoom Airlines flies regularly from Terminal 2 to Vancouver, Toronto and Calgary, Saudi Arabian Airlines to Riyadh, Air France to Paris; Continental and Singapore Airlines to Orlando, and PIA to Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi. Charter airlines operating from this terminal include First Choice Airways, flying to a selection of destinations worldwide such as Bridgetown in Barbados, Funchal on Madeira, Male in the Maldives and Sandford in Florida. Thomsonfly flights go for instance to Punta Cana, Marsa Alam, Goa, Marrakech and Paphos.
Terminal 3 is used primarily by British Airways and its partners. British Airways destinations include Tenerife, Billund, Brussels, Chicago and Frankfurt. Domestic British airports are also serve: Flybe also flies from Terminal 3, regularly serving Belfast, Edinburgh, Exeter, Jersey, Southampton and the Isle of Man; bmibaby goes to Aberdeen, Glasgow, West Knock, London-Heathrow and Newquay.
