History:
|
Construction work on the Aeropuerto Bajaras started in 1928, after it was decided at the beginning of the 1920’s to construct a further airport in addition to the airfields Getafe, Cuadro Viento and Torrejón Central in Barcelona already in existence. This airport was also to have sufficient surface area to enable future expansion. Officially, the airport was taken into operation on 22.04.1931; in 1933 the then-postline LAPE (Líneas Aéreas Postales Españolas) took over the first commercial route to Barcelona and the first international connections followed in the same year. In the 50’s, the airport was considered the most modern in Europe. Iberias first Lockheed Super Constellation started its first flight to New York in 1954. With the opening of the new Terminal T4 and T4S with the satellite buildings on 05.02.2006, Madrid-Barajas Airport became the second largest in world aviation by area.
