Description: London Heathrow Airport is an international passenger airport to the west of Great Britain’s capital city, London.

The airport is 15 miles from the centre of London in the London Borough of Hillingdon, inside the M25 motorway ring. It is the seat of British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways. On an area of 1600 ha and with a total of 67 million passengers, Heathrow has the greatest number of passengers in Europe ahead of Paris Airport Charles de Gaulle. It comes after Atlanta and Chicago as the third largest airport worldwide. Heathrow also has the largest international passenger number of all airports. In 1987, the British government privatised the airport operator British Airports Authority (now called BAA plc). Along with Heathrow, the other six UK airports (Gatwick, Stansted, Southampton, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Edinburgh) now also belong to BAA.

Location: Terminals 1,2 and 3 are accessible from the north via a six lane tunnel from the M4. Terminal 4 in the south of the airport may be reached via the M25. London Underground’s Piccadilly Line serves two stations: Heathrow Terminals 1-3 and Heathrow Terminal 4. The national railway network has 2 lines running from the airport to London Paddington Station: Heathrow Express and Heathrow Connect. Heathrow Express is a non-stop train service, connecting Heathrow Airport with Central London (recommended for passengers going to Terminal 4), whilst Heathrow Connect runs between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport, also stopping at the stations Ealing Broadway (change for the Central and District Lines), West Ealing, Hanwell, Southall and Hayes & Harlington. The end of the line is Terminals 1-3; from here the Heathrow Express may be used for the ongoing journey to Terminal 4.

A connection to the national rail network exists via direct trains from 3 stations: Reading, Watford Junction and Woking, and the Bus 285 from Feltham. More local bus services serve Heathrow airport from the central bus station, several of which also stop at Terminal 4. National Express coaches run between the airports Gatwick, Stansted and Luton and various English cities as well as London Victoria Railway Station. Public transport buses also serve the surrounding suburbs.
History:
Destinations: Terminals 1 and 2 are primarily used for inner European and domestic flights. Terminal 3 is used mainly for intercontinental travel whilst Terminal 4 is used exclusively by British Airways and its partner organisations of the Oneworld Alliance for intercontinental flights, whereas other airlines only very occasionally use Terminal 4. Terminal 5 is the newest addition to the airport and is momentarily still under construction, completion being planned for 2008. The terminal will almost exclusively be used by British Airways, meaning that the considerable capacities of Terminal 4 will then be available for use by other airlines. The Airbus A380 of other airlines are also to be handled at Terminal 5 alongside British Airways flights. One of the piers at Terminal 3 was temporarily extended so that scheduled services to Heathrow could be taken up from 2006.

The largest of the hangars to be found to the east of the airport are operated by British Airways, which has stationed 75% of its fleet here, British Midland and Virgin Atlantic also have hangars at Heathrow.

Heathrow Airport has flights serving more than 190 destinations with about 90 airlines, which also have their base at the airport. Amongst the airlines with the most destinations are: Bmi, British Airways, Iberia, Lufthansa, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways and many more.
