Description:
|
Hamburg Airport is the international airport of the city of Hamburg. Germany’s fifth largest airport, according to the number of passengers handled, Hamburg is on a par with Berlin-Tegel. In Europe it takes up place 22 and worldwide, place 94.
Hamburg Airport is situated 8.5 km north-west of Hamburg city centre, 8km south of the city centre of Norderstedt in Fuhlsbüttel between the town centres of Niendorf to the west and Langenhorn in the north-east. The airport is situated 12 km from Hamburg’s central station in the north of Hamburg. After World War II, Hamburg was Lufthansa’s hub airport which resumed air traffic there in 1955 until Frankfurt took over. Lufthansa’s technical headquarters are, however, still to be found in Hamburg. Since the inauguration of the new terminal on 25.05.2005, Hamburg airport, which was opened in 1912, is amongst the most modern airports in Europe. Built in 1911 on an area measuring 44 hectares, this international passenger airport now has a total area of 570 hectares (compare this with Munich airport which, with an area of 1500 hectares, is about triple the size). Of this, the main apron takes up 32 hectares (322,000 m²). A total of 53 aeroplanes can now be handled simultaneously at Hamburg Airport.
Routes within Germany and Europe are the main focus. Long-haul flights to New York with Continental, Toronto with Air Transat and Tehran with Iran Air are also provided, and Emirates has been flying to Dubai since 01.03.2006. Routes to Atlanta and Shanghai are being planned. Almost 70 airlines, amongst these Lufthansa, Air Berlin, TUIfly, Condor, dba and British Airways, to mention only the biggest (according to the number of passengers), fly non-stop from Hamburg to about 120 destinations. Amongst the low-cost airlines represented at the airport are also airBaltic, Cirrus Airlines, Germanwings, Germania Express (GEXX), InterSky and VLM.
Hamburg Airport can be reached via the motorway as well as by using the regular bus service provided by Hamburg’s transport services (Hamburger Verkehrsbund HV). Airport Express services also link the central train station with the airport. The service 110 Airport Express runs every 10 minutes between the S/U Bahn station Ohlsdorf and Terminals 1 and 4. There is still no direct link to the S-Bahn. This is however to be completed by 2007 along with a new terminal, improved parking facilities and the new shopping plaza.
