Description:
|
Aéroport International de Genève (Geneva International Airport) is in the Cointrin district of Geneva and is the second largest airport in Switzerland. It is amongst the larger regional airports in Europe and is located 4 km north of Geneva. It has the distinctive feature of having a Swiss and a French sector. The latter is to be found on French soil and, as there is only one terminal building, transfer for passengers without a Swiss visa takes place by booking a domestic French flight to the French sector of Geneva airport and then continuing the journey from there by car, train or bus to French cities or ski resorts. In this way, passengers are not forced to pass through Swiss passport or border controls.
Geneva Airport has a multi-modal transport system, including an integrated train station and connection to the Swiss and French motorway network. Coming from France, take the motorway A40 to the border and from there the motorway N1, which serves as an access road to the airport. The central Swiss sector of Geneva airport directly connects with the toll motorway N1 (a Swiss vignette is needed). In order to avoid passing through Swiss territory, drive directly to the French sector of the airport via Ferney-Voltaire, near Collonges on the D984. In Ferney-Voltaire, follow signs to Geneva and just before Swiss customs take the road to the right, which goes to the French sector of the airport. In front of the departure and arrivals halls of the airport there are bus stops for scheduled buses of the public transport company Geneva (TPG). Bus route 10 goes to the centre of Geneva, bus route 18 to the UN headquarters and other regional bus services go from the French sector to cities in the vicinity. From the international and French sectors of Geneva Cointrin Airport, the Aéro Skibus serves numerous French ski resorts. The Aero-Express has shuttle bus services to Grenoble, Chambéry and Lyon. At a distance of 300 m from the departure and arrivals halls is the airport train station. All trains stop at Geneva’s central station, Genève-Cornavin, and there is a direct link to destinations in the whole of Switzerland as well as to other European countries.
The most important airlines represented at Geneva Cointrin International Airport are the national Swiss airline Swiss (Swiss International Air Lines) and the low-cost airline EasyJet, which also has its hub at the airport. Geneva airport, which was opened in 1922, is also an important location for so-called VIP flights and profits from the numerous international organisations (UNO, IKRK, etc.) which are based in Geneva.
