Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is a passenger airport in Hunsruck, Rheinland-Pfalz. Building on the airport was begun in 1947 by the French occupiers. It was later taken over by the US Air Force, who then handed over Hahn airbase to civilian administration in 1993.
Frankfurt-Hahn Airport is situated about 125 km west of Frankfurt am Main, about 70 km north of Trier, 170 km south of Cologne and approximately 110 km east of Luxembourg. The next biggest cities are Mainz, at a distance of 60 km and Koblenz. Hahn Airport is situated close to the metropolitan areas of the Rhein-Main, Cologne-Bonn, Mannheim-Ludwigshafen and Luxembourg in a favourable economic area of Europe. Thanks to its central position and good transport links from all directions, it may still be easily reached despite not having a direct rail link. A motorway link exists via the A60 and A61 and the major roads B50 and B327; a free shuttle bus operates between the car parks and the passenger terminals. In order to satisfy growing traffic demands, a new bus terminal was opened in the autumn of 2005 about 500 m from the terminal.
More than 50 scheduled flights start and land every day from the airport. A total of 29 destinations are served in the whole of Europe. Amongst these destinations are for example: Bucharest (Blue Air), Minsk in Belorussia (Belavia), Reykjavik (Iceland Express) as well as Warsaw, Katowice and Budapest (Wizz Air). As far as passenger transport is concerned, the low-cost airport is served by diverse low-budget airlines, in particular Ryanair. In November 2005, Ryanair announced that they would increase the number of aeroplanes stationed at the airport to 18 by 2012, thereby turning it into the second largest hub behind London-Stansted. Other airlines based at the airport are Aeroflot, Air Armenia, Air New Zealand, Air VIA, British Airways, Bulgarian Airways, Egyptair, Iceland Express, Iran Air, MNG Airlines, Royal Jordanian and Wizzair. Scheduled flights also fly from Frankfurt-Hahn, particularly Business and so-called VIP flights. Regular flights to the Spanish islands no longer exist and attempts to set up a service to Berlin have turned out to be unprofitable due above all to competition from Cologne.
Until summer 2006, plans to develop Hahn airport comprised extending the runway to 3800 m to the west in order to make it suitable for long-haul cargo planes. As the protected Barbastelle bat was found in the cleared area, the conservation organisations „Naturschutzbund“ and „BUND“ appealed against the extension plans. The ensuing law suit has still not been settled.
