Description:
|
Frankfurt Main Airport is Germany’s second largest airport and an actual district of the city of Frankfurt am Main bearing the name Frankfurt-Flughafen.
The airport, also referred to as Rhein-Main Airport, was opened in 1936 and is presently the largest hub in Germany. Together with Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport, it is home to Lufthansa, the most important air carrier in Frankfurt, which has its base and main hub there. Rhein-Main Airport is about 20 km from the city centre, south-west of Frankfurt am Main. The airport may be reached from all directions using the motorways A3, A5 and A67, buses stop at Terminal 1 at the bus station in front of the arrivals hall and at Terminal 2 on level 2 in front of the arrival and departure halls. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are linked by the sky line or the bus shuttle, which provide a fast service between the two terminals. The Frankfurt Airport Railway Station for long-distance services, which was opened in 1999, is to be found in the AirRail Terminal in close proximity to Terminal 1. The regional railway station for the S-Bahn, regional and local trains is situated here. Frankfurt Airport also has two railway stations operated by Deutsche Bahn which are directly accessible from Terminal 1. According to the numbers of passengers handled, Frankfurt/Main is the third largest passenger airport in Europe (passengers in 2005: 52,219,412) coming after the Airport Charles de Gaulle (passengers in 2005: 53,756,200) and London Heathrow Airport (passengers in 2005: 67,915,389). Worldwide it takes up place 8.
Counting only scheduled flights (excluding charter flights), almost 260 destinations in nearly 110 countries are serves, enabled by the presence of 150 airlines. Amongst the low-cost airlines operating from Frankfurt Airport are: Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Condor and Germania Express (GEXX). In total, the number of charter airlines is limited to about 50, as the low-cost airlines are tending to use the alternative Frankfurt Hahn Airport.
