Description:
|
Dresden Airport is a modern airport connecting the city and region of Dresden at a national and continental level. It is situated 9 km north of the city of Dresden in the district of Klotzsche, where it was opened on 11.07.1935. It has an area of 280 ha. The catchment area of Dresden Airport includes the districts of Dresden and Chemnitz as well as regions in the south of Brandenburg. Dresden Airport also presents an attractive transport service for passengers from the areas bordering with Poland and the Czech Republic.
Dresden airport may be reached directly via the motorways A4 and A13 as well as the B97, using the exit Dresden-Flughafen. Its runway is positioned north-north-east, parallel to the A4. The airport has the greatest passenger numbers of all the airports in former East Germany.
7 airlines fly to 11 destinations with 201 scheduled flights per week. With a total of 7 and sometimes 8 connections per working day, Munich is the most frequently flown to destination. Airlines operating scheduled flights include Austrian Airlines (Wien), Cirrus Airlines (Hamburg - Zurich), Air Berlin (Munich - Dusseldorf), Germanwings (Cologne-Bonn - Stuttgart - Hamburg), Intersky (Friedrichshafen), Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (Dortmund - Leipzig/Halle) and Lufthansa (Dusseldorf - Frankfurt - Leipzig/Halle - Munich). Charter flights are operated by 14 airlines to 41 destinations, amongst these Air Berlin, SunExpress and GEXX.
Due to the Second World War actual civil use of the airport was only taken up after 1955. Until 1960, the airport did not possess sufficient facilities for passenger check-in, so this temporarily took place near Dresden central station. Checked-in passengers were then transported in buses directly to the machines on the runway.
The runway of the airport is to be extended and refurbished in 2007. The new runway is to measure 2850 m and the old runway to be demolished after building work is complete.
