Description:

Dortmund Airport is 16 km east of Dortmund directly at the border to Holzwickede. The distance of Dortmund-Wickede Airport to the centre of Dortmund is about 20 km. In the last few years it has developed from a regional airport to being a significant passenger airport in North Rhine Westphalia although, with its 220 ha, it is one of the smaller airports in the Ruhr.
Dortmund Airport, opened in 1960, is situated at the eastern edge of the Ruhr and easily accessible from all directions as well as via the major motorways. It is conveniently situated on the A40 (B1) and the A44. From the A40/B1 the airport is accessed via exit Holzwickende/Dortmund-Wickende/Flughafen. There are parking zones at Dortmund Airport subject to a fee including short term car parks and long term car parks, which may be also be rented as permanent parking spaces. A free shuttle bus service runs at regular intervals from 4 a.m. till 10 p.m. A direct connection to Dortmund central railway station has been available since 15.07.2004. A shuttle bus runs during the airport opening hours between Dortmund central bus station and the airport terminal. First buses going to the airport leave from the station at 4 a.m., with the last service leaving the airport at 220 hours to Dortmund central station; the duration of the journey is 25 minutes.
First scheduled flights were operated by the “RFG - Reise- und Industrieflug GmbH”, later called Eurowings AG, with the inauguration of the route Dortmund - Munich. A newly built 850 m length runway (plus 100 m paved stopways), with a width of 30 m, is now called the Ruhr runway and was opened in 1983.
Major components of the airport are business travel, tourism as well as low-cost travel, 40 destinations in Europe and north Africa are flown to. A strong increase in passenger numbers is expected as growing numbers of low-cost airlines are flying to the airport. Represented at Dortmund Airport are: Air Berlin, Condor, EasyJet and Wizz Air, the airline EasyJet has created many new connections within Europe and the airline WizzAir has launched scheduled flights to Poland. In 2005, Dortmund was the third largest airport in NRW.
Destinations in April 2006 included Alicante, Ankara, Antalya, Barcelona, Fuerteventura, Ibiza, Istanbul, Gran Canaria, Mallorca, Paris, Tenerife, Tunis and Zurich. In the winter from 18.12 there is a skicharter to Bozen on Sundays. From the summer timetable 2006, in part scheduled flights to Split, Burgas, Varna, Wroclaw, Rostock-Laage and Heringsdorf (Usedom) will be launched. Apart from this, as of Summer 2006, Hapagfly will again operate weekly flights to Palma de Mallorca.
