Description:
|
Cologne-Bonn Airport "Konrad Adenauer", formerly called Cologne/Bonn Airport and also called Cologne-Wahn, is a German passenger airport and is 14.8 km south-east of Cologne city centre, 22 km north of Bonn and partly also in the district of Rhein-Sieg. With an area of 1000 ha, the airport site is surrounded by the nature reserve Wahner Heide; it is not, however, considered as belonging to it.
In 2004, Cologne Airport, opened in 1938, was the fourth largest airport in Germany and number 7 according to passenger numbers. Along with Leipzig and Hahn Airport, Cologne/Bonn is one of the few German airports without a ban on night time flying. This results in a considerable amount of noise pollution in the densely populated area around the airport (Cologne, Rhein-Sieg district, Rheinisch-Bergisch district).
The flight destinations on offer can be broken down into these areas: most German passenger airports, which are flown to several times a day; main European cities such as London, Stockholm or Nice, served several times a week and often on a daily basis; the tourist destinations in the Mediterranean area and the Canary Islands as well as the weekly to daily connections to many East European cities. The offer comprises 139 flight destinations in 38 countries.
After the 3800 m runway was completed in 1961, the first long-haul flight took off from Cologne/Bonn. On 11.05.2006, Continental Airlines took up the first scheduled flight to the Usa from Cologne/Bonn after 15 years and since then has been operating daily flights to New York Newark. From October 2006, the Brazilian BRA is to offer holiday flights to Brazil.
Amongst the most significant airlines are the two low-cost airlines which have been based at Cologne Airport since autumn 2002: Germanwings and TUIfly, and the Lufthansa, the majority of whose flights are operated by partner companies such as Lufthansa CityLine. Further flights are operated by airlines such as Air Berlin, LTU and Condor Airline. Several smaller companies and many foreign airlines also fly from Cologne Airport. Low-cost airlines apart from those already listed also include airBaltic, Centralwings, Cirrus Airlines, EasyJet, EUJet.com, InterSky and Snowflake Airlines, which is also based at Cologne Airport.
In June, the airport railway station was completed as part of the high speed route between Cologne-Rhein/Main. The underground DB and S-Bahn station can be reached via the basement of Termanl 2. Cologne-Bonn Airport is continuously being extended and improved.
