Brussels International Airport, also called Brussels National, is located 12 km north-east of the Belgian capital Brussels in the community of Zaventem.
Brussels airport contains a civil as well as a military part, the military part being used as an air force base by Melsbroek. The airport is also significant as far as air cargo is concerned.
There are plans for a rail link for the TGV. The existing rail connection takes passengers from Brussels airport to the city centre and the Airport city express provides a connection with Brussels – midi, central and north. There is also a shuttle service to and from Brussels as well as direct connections with the east, west and south of Belgium. Besides the regular bus service, an hourly service is provided by the SN Brussels Airlines Expressbus to and from Antwerpen. The so-called airport line is a bus service that operates between the train station Brussels-Luxemburg and Brussels airport. The Brussels ring road provides convenient access to the airport for those travelling by car.
In 2001, the airport suffered considerably as a result of the bankruptcy of the Belgian airline Sabena. Sabena’s successor is SN Brussels Airlines, which, together with Virgin Express and DHL Aviation, uses the airport as an aviation hub. EAT and SN Cargo are also based at the airport along with Virgin Express.
