Description:
|
Suvarnabhumi Airport is the international airport of Bangkok in Thailand. It is also called (New) Bangkok International Airport to distinguish it from Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok’s former international airport. As well as being called New Bangkok International Airport (NBIA), Suvarnabhumi International Airport is also referred to as Second Bangkok International Airport. The name Suvarnabhumi (pronounced Su-Wan-Na-Puum) was given to it by the King of Thailand King Rama IX; it means something like "golden peninsular” or “golden country”.
With a height of 132.2 m, Suvarnabhumi International Airport’s control tower is the highest in the world. The airport also boasts the second largest single building and airport terminal in the world (563,000 m²), behind Hong Kong International Airport (570,000 m²) and just ahead of South Korea Seoul-Incheon International Airport (496,000 m²). It replaces the old Don Mueang International Airport, Bangkok city’s former international airport, which, in 2005, was at place 4 of Asia’s busiest passenger airports (after Tokyo-Haneda Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport). It is Bangkok’s main airport for all commercial flights.
After numerous delays, Suvarnabhumi Airport was finally completely opened to commercial air traffic in September 2006. It took on all Don Muang Airport flights and is now the hub of Thai Airways International. The 6 airlines: Thai Airways International, Nok Air, Thai Air Asia, Bangkok Airways, PBAir and One-Two-GO started with 20 domestic flights, including to Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, Khon Kaen, Krabi, Mae Hong Son, Phuket and Surat Thani. From 15.09.2006, there was a limited number of flights with Jetstar Asia Airways three times daily to Singapur and several with Thai Airways International to Phitsanulok, Chiang Mai and Ubon Ratchathani. Bangkok Airways was added on 21.09.2006, along with AirAsia and Thai AirAsia on 25.09.2006 and Nok Air on 26.09.2006.
Other airlines represented at the airport are: Thai AirAsia, Thai Airways International, Thai Sky Airlines, United Airlines and Xiamen Airlines.
Suvarnabhumi Airport is to be found 25 km from downtown Bangkok in Racha Thewa, 15 km east of the Bangna Trat Highway in the Bang Phli District of Samut Prakam Province. It is accessible via 5 routes: from the north using the Bangkok-Chonburi New Highway; from the north-west from Khlao Road and the King Kaew Flyover; from the south via the Bangna Trat Highway and Buraphavithi Expressway; from the north-east using the On Nut Road and from the west using the Kaew Road. There is also a connection from the centre of Bangkok using the city railway of Thailand between Phayathal-Makkasan-Suvarnabhumi Airport.
SRT operates a suburban commuter train service between the airport and Hua Takhe, the nearest station of the East Line, and the north-eastern suburb Rangsit via downtown Bangkok and the former Don Mueang Airport. The Airport Express, unofficially also known as the Pink Line, works together with SRT’s planned Red Line as the carrier that will be linked to the stations Phaya Thai and Phetchaburi of the BTS Sukhumvit Line (Green Line, Route 1) and the MRT Blue Line. 6 bus routes link the airport with Bangkok, 3 others provide a connection with other Provinces (one of these lines runs to the well known resort of Pattaya). The construction of a high-speed route for the rail link of the airport, measuring 28.6 km, is planned for completion in 2008.
