Description:
British Midland Airways Ltd.(bmi, British Midlands International) is the second largest British airline and is a member of the Star Alliance, the largest airline alliance in the world. Among the 18 members of this alliance are for example the airlines United Airlines (USA), All Nippon, Thai and in Europe, Austrian, Lufthansa, SAS and Swiss. It focuses mainly on France, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands.
In line with East Midlands Airport, where the formerly regionally operating airline had its headquarters, the name Midland was adopted when the airline was renamed in 1946, even if the name should more correctly be called Central Midlands.
After the airline began operating international flights to the United States and the Caribbean, cheap routes were offered via the youngest subsidiary airline bmibaby, for example, a connection to Cardiff in Wales. The airline’s destinations are in England, Scotland, Ireland and Scandinavia. The subsidiary bmi baby is used by German customers mainly on the route between Hanover and London-Heathrow.
In the course of 6 decades, British Midlands has expanded from being a small, local provider to the second largest airline in London-Heathrow. With the British Midland Group (formerly "Airlines of Britain"), which has formed around British Midland, the long time boss of the company, Sir Michael Bishop, has succeeded in setting up a counterweight to British Airways. Manx Airlines, Loganair and Business Air together with the British Midland formed a conglomerate, of which the largest and biggest part is British Midland.
