The American and former Pan Am pilot Kim Lundgren from Portland established "Air Berlin Inc." in Berlin in 1978 as a charter airline under US (FAA) approval in the State of Oregon, as, after the Second World War until the fall of the Wall in 1989, only allied powers aircraft were allowed to fly to Berlin. After the Wall fell, the air sovereignty of the allies was lifted and a change to the admission Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) was needed. On 16.04.1991 the German Air Berlin GmbH & Co. KG aviation was christened and, from an airline with a formerly small niche, air Berlin grew into the largest airline company in Germany with more than 40 Boeing 737 and a scheduled type network.
