Description:
The American and former Pan Am pilot Kim Lundgren from Portland established "Air Berlin Inc." in Berlin in 1978 as a charter airline under US (FAA) approval in the State of Oregon, as, after the Second World War until the fall of the Wall in 1989, only allied powers aircraft were allowed to fly to Berlin. After the Wall fell, the air sovereignty of the allies was lifted and a change to the admission Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) was needed. On 16.04.1991 the German Air Berlin GmbH & Co. KG aviation was christened and, from an airline with a formerly small niche, air Berlin grew into the largest airline company in Germany with more than 40 Boeing 737 and a scheduled type network. Since 1997, Air Berlin PLC & Co. has been a member of IATA (International Air Transport Association) and a scheduled airline. Air Berlin regards itself as a low-fare airline, and as such it has a low-fare alliance with the airline NIKI from Austria (in early 2004 Air Berlin bought up 24% of "NIKI"). On 01.01.2006 Air Berlin changed its corporate form from a GmbH & Co. KG to a corporation under UK law (plc & Co. KG).
In January 2006, Air Berlin’s fleet consisted mainly of aircraft from Boeing and Airbus. In November 2004 Air Berlin together with its partner NIKI ordered 70 aircraft of the type A320 from Airbus, and 40 further machines on purchase option agreement. The company’s maiden flight took off on 28.04.1979 with a rented Boeing 707 on the route from Berlin to Palma de Mallorca. Later, destinations in the United States were also served. Soon after, the Boeing 707 was replaced by two smaller Boeing 737s and Air Berlin instead focused on destinations in the Mediterranean region, where Mallorca is still Air Berlin’s main destination. In January 2005, the product lines, "City Shuttle" and "Majorca Shuttle" were merged under the name "Euro Shuttle” in order to highlight the European competence of the airline.
The airline Germania, with a fleet of 44 aircraft was soon to be tied to Air Berlin via a management contract. Model for this was the existing partnership of Air Berlin with the Austrian airline NIKI, with which AirBerlin had cooperated since 2004. First contacts were already established one and a half years earlier, when Air Berlin leased aircraft from Germania. In return, Germania ceased flying on the highly competitive routes to Zurich and Vienna.
Air Berlin was voted best airline in the low-cost sector by Stiftung Warentest. With excellent results in an independent passenger survey done by Skytrax, it was voted Europe’s best low-cost airline. Air Berlin flies regularly to the most popular holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands and in North Africa as well as major European cities. Destinations including Alicante, Almeria, Malaga and Jerez de la Frontera have long been part of the flight plan, as well as Greece and its islands, the south of Italy, Turkey, Faro in Portugal, Madeira, Tunisia, Morocco and Egypt. There are many city links, in countries such as the UK, Austria and the Netherlands. The "Euro-Shuttle" (formerly "City Shuttle") links German airports and also provides a direct connection to Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, Helsinki, Copenhagen, London-Stansted, Madrid, Milan-Bergamo, Manchester, Paris, Rome, Vienna and Zurich. The airline is also stationed in Dresden, Erfurt, Leipzig / Halle, Rostock-Laage. Other departure airports are Altenburg, Berlin-Schönefeld, Berlin-Tegel, Bremen, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt / Main, Hamburg, Hanover, Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden, Cologne / Bonn, Munster / Osnabruck, Nuremberg, Munich, Paderborn / Lippstadt, Saarbrücken and Stuttgart. From airports in Germany, Austria and Switzerland there are connections to more than 60 international destinations.
