History:
Virgin America is another airline of the Virgin Group, owned by Sir Richard Branson, who already very successfully runs other airlines in the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Australia and New Zealand. Branson already had the idea of a U.S. branch in 2004, but was only granted the flight licence in 2007. Branson only actually owns a 25% share of Virgin America as this is what the US law stipulates, the remaining 75% of the share capital are owned by VAI Partners LLC.
Headquarters and the hub of low-cost carrier are in San Francisco. Initially Richard Branson had problems finding the required capital for his new project and the U.S. authorities created difficulties for him in placing the airline in the US market, as they were trying to protect the domestic airlines against its pricing policy. The airline then finally did receive its licence on 18th May 2007. On 11th July, permission followed for the advance sale of air tickets. The successful maiden flight subsequently took place on 8th August 2007 on the route from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
