History:
The American low-cost carrier US Airways was founded on 5th March 1937 in Pittsburgh / Pennsylvania by the du Pont family, under the original name of All American Aviation Company. The airline is now one of the 10 largest airlines in the United States. At first, it operated only postal flights. 12 years after it was established, the company extended its business sector to include scheduled flights. The company was renamed All American Airways in 1949. However, success was only visible after 1952, 3 years later, when another name change took place to Allegheny Airlines. Until 1979 this was one of the largest airlines in the north-eastern United States. In 1979 it was realised that an expansion to other routes to destinations could only take place in the south of the United States and the airline was again renamed to USAir. Another 17 years later, a further renaming took place and the airline finally received its present name US Airways. At the end of the 1990s, the airline was in financial difficulties, which were further enhanced by the events of 11th September 2001. Even joining the internationally renowned Star Alliance on 4 May 2004 did not bring immediate success. On 27th September 2005 the airline America West from Las Vegas finally took over the operations of the airline. The activities of America West were cancelled and merged with the routes of US Airways. This step of bundling all flights under the name US Airways was based on the fact that this name was more widely known internationally.
