History:
TAM, the largest Brazilian airline was founded on Feb 21st 1961 in Sao Paulo, under the original name Táxi Aereo Marilia SA, in order to transport goods and passengers with one Cessna plane to and from Sao Paulo and Matto Grosso. The airline only experienced a boost in popularity at the beginning of the 1980s, after it had expanded its regional routes. The renaming of the company's name to Transportes Aéreos Meridionais was undertaken in 1996, and in the same year, TAM also provided its first international flights to South American destinations. For this, the subsidiary airline TAM Mercosur was established. Since 1993, the airline has been offering a frequent flyer program:"Fidelidade" where passengers collect bonus miles (similar to the Miles & More concept of Deutsche Lufthansa).
