Description:
Spanair was founded in December 1986 in Palma on the Island of Mallorca by the SAS and the Spanish tour operator Viajes Marsans. The airline at first concentrated on providing charter flights and started operating flights in March 1988. In 2003 the airline finally became a member of the Star Alliance, also backed by the parent company SAS.
The network originally concentrated on the Spanish market and now includes more than 50 destinations, but the airline will also offer flights to the United States (these under the code-share procedure of the SAS and other airlines in the Star Alliance). Some of these national and international airports served from the main hub in Madrid and the other hubs in Barcelona and Palma are: Banjul, Alger, Athens, Istanbul, Sofia, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, Alicante, Malaga, Bilbao and Fuerteventura.
