History:
The low-cost airline Gol Transportes Aéreos was founded in 2000 in Sao Paulo by the multinational concern Grupo Aurea. After being granted a licence by the Brazilian aviation authority, the new air carrier was able to start operations on 15th January 2001. The very successful start was facilitated by the financially ailing and meanwhile insolvent VARIG. After only 3 years in business, on 24th June 2004, the company was able to go public at the Sao Paulo and New York stock exchanges. In the spring of 2007, the complete take over of the national carrier VARIG finally took place. According to the latest information, this traditional company, which has been in existence since 1927, will continue to operate under its own name. GOL, as a separate company, will in the next few years concentrate its efforts on the profitable South American low cost market, while VARIG will be responsible for long-haul international routes.

Network:
Currently (Summer 2007), GOL serves 59 different destinations in a total of 7 South American countries. In Brazil, for example, destinations include Aracaju, Brasilia, Florianopolis, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Recife and Rio de Janeiro. International destinations are for example the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires, and Santa Cruz de la Sierra in Bolivia, Santiago de Chile, Panama City, Asuncion in Paraguay, the Peruvian capital Lima, and Montevideo in Uruguay. In addition, the airline plans to take on more routes in Mexico in the future.
